THE TRADITIONAL STYLE…..
A traditional style can seem stuffy and boring. However, my experience as a designer and working for Christies' London has given me an appreciation of the traditional style of interior design.
Its timeless style is influenced by European decor. It is more formal and orderly. Furnishing will match, forms are symmetrical and interiors will have that sense of sophistication.
Neutral backgrounds are key for common spaces but richer colours in jewel like tones may also be used. Check out the palettes of a paint supplier such as Farrow & Ball for inspiration.
Character is created in the details. Accessories are grand and luxurious. Architectural details such as cornices, baseboards, architraves, wood panelling are used throughout traditional design. A focal point, such as a chimneypiece or artwork are key.
Fabrics are traditional patterns: chintzes, paisley, tartans and plaids, ticking stripes are common. Trim on cushions, pillows and other decorative items are common.
It is a homelike style and is make comfortable as it is easily recognisable. Magazines such as Traditional Home may serve as inspiration.
Ready to get a lil' personal? Read on for 3 things that will customize your interior design style!
1. Become a collector: Check out auction houses, vintage and antique stores for classic pieces that may be refinished, repainted or just cleaned well that may give your interior that extra edge.
2. Become friends with your local upholsterer. Seating is particularly useful in the traditional interior. You may want to stick with a contemporary sofa but armchairs and occasional chairs can be reupholstered in contemporary fabrics.
3. Check out storage solutions. Chests, sideboards and cupboards are a fraction of the price of modern alternatives. Made of solid timber (not melamine covered MDF) They may be able to be stripped back and refinished to create sturdy storage that will last for years.
